Showing your age.. at least it’s not an all gold version..:-) Just kidding, it’s a nice looking submariner. Diameter? Next thing you can “invest” in is a winder. It gets annoying to set the time whenever you switch watches.
It’s the 16600 Sea Dweller, 40mm.
I was thinking of getting one earlier this year – unlike the Submariner, the Sea Dweller doesn’t have a date bubble, and I really dislike the Rolex date bubble – but I didn’t, and then Rolex discontinued it.
The new Sea Dweller (deep sea) is large and clunky, and not to my liking at all. Meanwhile prices for new 16600’s have skyrocketed in Tokyo from the RRP of 609,000 yen to 880,000 yen in some places. After a lot of searching – before they become extinct and I lose the only Rolex that I like – I managed to track down a new one outside central Tokyo for just 550,000 yen (which was the going price before Rolex discontinued them).
I’m very pleased with it.
Ah didn’t notice the lack of the date cyclop. Nice watch, a bit too rich for me :-)
Is that rich in terms of price, or rich in terms of decoration? I actually find the Sea Dweller to be pretty minimal – there are no chrono dials in the background, no GMT hand, no buttons – so I couldn’t consider it rich in terms of decoration myself (certainly not compared to the Breitling that I like).
I meant just the price. The design is definitely not too complicated, I’m not a big fan of crowded dials either. In fact I don’t own any chrono, although I looked at the Avenger Seawolf but decided I have enough dive watches for now.
Rolex hold their value pretty good. I have seen 20yo versions of this watch sell for more than I paid for a new one. Since this is the last issue of the watch, I’m pretty sure it will keep most of its value – heck, it’s already selling for 50% more than I paid for it in some places.
I’m a Navitimer man myself, but what I don’t like about Breitlings is that they don’t have the large sweep second hand. Now that I have the Rolex though, that’s less important – one model with, one model without.
I’m thinking to get a cheaper mechanical watch for when travelling or when I don’t want to wear the Rolex outside – seen a couple of good ones but no decision yet.
